Trump: Pompeo may run for Senator from Kansas

The President suggested that the incumbent Secretary of state would easily win the election and help the Republican party retain its Senate seat

President Donald trump on Friday conceded that Secretary of state Mike Pompeo could run for Senator from Kansas next year. Trump said this during a live interview on “Fox and friends.”

Pompeo, who previously represented the Republican party in the House of representatives, said that he does not plan to participate in the elections for the Senate, but many Republicans believe this scenario is quite likely. The deadline for applying for election will not come until the end of June next year.

Trump expressed confidence that Pompeo will easily win this election if he decides to run for the Senate.

“He loves the people of Kansas. If he decides there’s a chance of losing this seat [in a fight with Democrats], I think he’ll do it, and he’ll win by a landslide, because Kansas loves him, ” trump said.

Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell and other Republicans believe Pompeo’s participation in the election will help the party retain its Senate seat. Now Kansas is represented in the Senate by Republican Pat Roberts, who refused to participate in the next election.

Republicans are not entirely sure of winning another candidate for the seat, Kris Kobach, the former Texas Secretary of state, who also plans to run. Kobach, known for his conservative views on immigration issues, lost the Kansas gubernatorial election last year.

Trump appointed Pompeo Secretary of state in 2018. Prior to that, Mike Pompeo worked as Director of the CIA.
